Project Overview

Superstition Energy Storage (Superstition) is ideally located on an industrially zoned parcel in the Town of Gilbert, Arizona, immediately adjacent to the existing Corbell Substation. The 90 MW / 360 MWh battery storage facility provides capacity and energy services to the Salt River Project (SRP) electrical grid in southeast Phoenix, enhancing grid reliability and accelerating the integration of readily available, domestically produced renewable energy sources in the sunny southwestern United States. A Special Use Permit application for the Superstition project was approved by the Town of Gilbert in late 2022, facilitating public engagement and education about the facility in the process.

Construction of Superstition began in fall 2023, and the facility came online in June 2024. Superstition helps Salt River Project meet its reliability needs and its goals to reduce carbon dioxide by 65% from 2005 levels by 2035 and by 90% by 2050.

Situated directly adjacent to existing transmission lines and the existing Corbell substation in an industrial park, the site has no adverse environmental impacts. The Superstition site is an optimal location for new energy infrastructure, as it eliminates the need for long transmission lines to connect it to the existing power grid and is a conducive use to the surrounding infrastructure.
